Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Scotland have different Income Tax bands?
Income Tax on non-savings, non-dividend income is a devolved power under the Scotland Act 2016 — the Scottish Parliament sets its own bands and rates, while National Insurance and everything else stays UK-wide.
Do Scottish taxpayers pay more or less than the rest of the UK?
It depends on income. Lower earners pay slightly less (a 19% starter rate below the basic rate), but from roughly £30,000+ Scottish taxpayers generally pay more due to the intermediate, higher, and top-rate bands kicking in earlier and at higher percentages than England/Wales/NI.
How do I know if I pay Scottish Income Tax?
HMRC uses your main residence, not your employer's location — if you live in Scotland for most of the tax year, your tax code starts with an "S" and Scottish rates apply regardless of where your employer is based.
Does National Insurance differ in Scotland?
No — National Insurance is reserved (UK-wide), not devolved, so NI thresholds and rates are identical whether you live in Scotland or the rest of the UK.
